About Pico do Areeiro
Because it stands at an altitude of 1818 metres, it is one of the highest places — offering one of the best views — on the island of Madeira.
At 1818 metres above sea level, the third-highest point on the island of Madeira is Pico do Areeiro. From this lofty vantage point, visitors are greeted with a panoramic view that showcases the impressive grandeur of Madeira’s central mountain massif, with the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop. Beyond the sweeping perspective of the central mountain range, from Pico do Areeiro one can also spot Ponta de São Lourenço, Curral das Freiras, and on days of excellent visibility, the island of Porto Santo. Pico do Areeiro is one of the most visited spots on the island, drawing curious travelers and photography enthusiasts, especially at sunrise — when weather conditions permit an unforgettable spectacle. From Pico do Areeiro, hikers can also embark on the famous PR1 “Vereda do Areeiro” trail, which heads toward Pico das Torres (1851 m) and concludes at Pico Ruivo (1862 m). Access conditions: Parking: €4.00/hour
