About Paul da Serra
Paul da Serra is Madeira’s only plateau, stretching across a vast high-altitude landscape that feels unlike anywhere else on the island. Located at around 1500 metres above sea level, it offers dramatic scenery, endless skies, and a gateway to some of Madeira’s most beautiful hiking trails.
Unlike the rugged mountains that define much of Madeira’s terrain, Paul da Serra is flat and open—providing panoramic views in every direction. On clear days, you can glimpse both the north and south coasts of the island from a single vantage point. This high-altitude plateau is also one of the best places to explore the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many levada and nature trails start from or pass through Paul da Serra, making it ideal for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Its unique ecosystem supports endemic flora and fauna, as well as important water reservoirs for the island. Whether you're hiking, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the silence of nature, Paul da Serra delivers a truly serene and unforgettable experience.
