About Curral das Freiras
Tucked deep within Madeira’s central mountains, Curral das Freiras is a unique village sheltered by dramatic peaks. Often described as a natural amphitheatre or volcanic crater, this remote parish is rich in history, culture, and natural charm.
The name Curral das Freiras (Nuns’ Valley) stems from a 16th-century event when nuns from the Santa Clara convent in Funchal sought refuge here to escape pirate raids. Due to its secluded location, the village remained isolated for centuries, preserving a distinct cultural identity. The valley is famous for its abundant chestnut groves, celebrated every autumn during the Festa da Castanha (Chestnut Festival). Locals use chestnuts in cakes, soups, liqueurs, and traditional dishes—making the village a culinary destination in its own right. The landscape is stunning: steep cliffs, winding mountain roads, and hiking trails lead to panoramic viewpoints like Eira do Serrado, offering breathtaking perspectives over the valley. Visiting Curral das Freiras is like stepping into a hidden world of peaceful beauty, local traditions, and alpine serenity.
