About the Cristo Rei Viewpoint
With its exuberant biodiversity and crystal-clear waters, the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve is one of Madeira’s most enchanting spots. Nestled within this protected area lies the Cristo Rei Viewpoint, offering breathtaking views where nature reigns supreme.
Located in the parish of Caniço, municipality of Santa Cruz, the Cristo Rei Viewpoint overlooks the Garajau Natural Reserve, part of Funchal bay, and Caniço de Baixo. It offers a privileged view of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding landscapes. The viewpoint is named after the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, commissioned by Aires de Ornelas and inaugurated on October 30, 1927. The statue, with open arms facing the ocean, is perched atop a coastal cliff and has become an iconic landmark and symbol of faith and peace in Madeira.
