About Câmara de Lobos

Câmara de Lobos is a charming fishing town on Madeira’s south coast, rich in history, tradition, and Atlantic scenery. Once the landing point of João Gonçalves Zarco, this was the first inhabited settlement on the island, dating back to the early 15th century.

The name “Câmara de Lobos” (Chamber of Sea Lions) originates from the colony of sea lions discovered in its cove by Zarco and his men in the 1420s. This natural harbor, still retaining its original shape, was where Madeira’s first settlement emerged. Today, Câmara de Lobos is a municipality of around 35,000 inhabitants spread across five parishes: Câmara de Lobos, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Jardim da Serra, Quinta Grande, and Curral das Freiras. The area is dotted with historic landmarks such as the Nossa Senhora da Conceição chapel (15th century), the São Bernardino Convent (1425), and the São Sebastião Church (16th century). Its colorful fishing boats, known as “Xavelhas,” remain a symbol of local identity, bobbing gently in the picturesque bay that once inspired Winston Churchill to paint. Whether you're exploring the cliffs, enjoying fresh seafood, or admiring the Atlantic views, Câmara de Lobos offers an authentic glimpse into Madeira’s soul.
